WELCOME TO HISTORY

AT HCCPS!

2024-2025

Through the teaching of history, we aim to ignite in our pupils a passion for learning and a curiosity about the past. Our curriculum is designed to progressively develop skills and knowledge, which meet the aims and objectives of the national curriculum, whilst also enabling teachers to tailor lessons to the interests and needs of their pupils. We seek to inspire pupils through creative and engaging teaching and learning opportunities and equip pupils with skills in historical enquiry and interpretation, chronological understanding and knowledge and understanding of events, people and changes in the past. .

HISTORIANS OUT AND ABOUT - Phoebe in Year 5 came face to face with Emmeline Pankhurst at Madame Tussaud's in London. What brilliant inspiration for our Year 5/6 History topic - Fighting for Freedom! This is what she said about it.

‘It was great to see the model of Emmeline after learning about her. It was a very detailed and lifelike model. It even had her medal which had ‘hunger strike’ on it. I can see why she is famous as she has done so much for women.'

WHAT DOES HISTORY LOOK LIKE IN RECEPTION?

Children in Reception do not study history as a separate subject, instead the early years foundation stage (EYFS) framework identifies important knowledge and skills that can support their learning in the future. As part of ‘Understanding the world’, children are expected to know about some similarities and differences between the past and now, and to understand the past through settings, characters and events they learn about. The EYFS also highlights the importance of children developing vocabulary that will support their understanding across a range of areas.

HISTORY IN YEAR 1/2

SCHOOLS IN THE PAST

Year 1/2 did a topic about what schools were like during the Victorian times. They had a dress-up day and took part in lots of activities. They focused on what a day would look like for children at school during the Victorian era, from using chalk boards, very strict teachers and only having basic equipment to play with. Children weren’t always very happy in school!

HISTORY IN YEAR 3/4

THE ROMANS

ROMAN DAY - OCT 2024

Year 3/4 had a dress-up day and took part in lots of Roman activities including making their own bread, designing mosaics and practising turtle formations with their shields like the Roman army!

Here are some quotes from children about what they enjoyed most about their Roman Day...

I really enjoyed our Roman Day because we got to dress up in togas and make different battle formations as the Roman Army. My favourite part was making mouth-watering bread!

Charlotte – Year 4.

Our Roman Day was incredible! We got to make our own bread, which was delicious and designed mosaics. My favourite part was when we got to make turtle formations like the Roman army, with our shields.
Takeru – Year 4.

The Roman Day was really enjoyable because we got to do things that we probably won’t get to do again! I really liked marching as a Roman soldier and doing formations with our shields.

Jacob – Year 4.

HISTORY IN YEAR 5/6

FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM

TRIP TO THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM, DUXFORD - OCT 2024

LOOK ON THE Y5/6 YEAR GROUP PAGE ON THE CHILDREN TAB FOR MORE PHOTOS!

In the first half term we have been looking at what life was like for Victorian women and the fight by suffragettes to secure the right to vote. Here are some Suffragette posters we made to help the cause.

SUFFRAGETTE DEBATES - We had one suffragette debate about whether women should or shouldn't get the vote and another debate about whether it was better to be a suffragette or a (peaceful) suffragist. The children had to come up with strong arguments for their side of the debate. The other half then voted for the stronger debating team, even if they didn't agree with their views. Let's just say there were some very strong opinions and convincing arguments!
