Learning Spanish at Hardwick and Cambourne
At Hardwick and Cambourne Primary School we believe that learning a foreign language should ignite curiosity, foster intercultural understanding and lay strong foundations for future language learning. We believe that it gives children an opportunity to explore the relationship between language and identity as well as developing an international outlook which nurtures respect, appreciation and understanding of the world, and their place within it. The National Curriculum states that, “learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures.” It also stimulates children to think about how language works and supports key communication skills such as active listening, speaking with confidence and expressing ideas clearly. We follow a scheme of work which is aligned with the MFL Pedagogy Review (2016) and developed by Rachel Hawkes who is the Director of International Education and Research for The Cam Academy Trust. The carefully sequenced progression of knowledge and skills ensures that pupils develop the confidence, enthusiasm and linguistic foundations needed for success as they continue their language learning journey.
