What have we been learning about in school?

Reception

Reception have been exploring the theme of individuality as part of their All About Me topic. Pupils have been studying their own features closely, observing skin, hair, and eye colour, and developing their skills in colour mixing, brush control, and proportion through self-portrait painting. They created detailed portraits using layered paint to capture tones and textures, which are now displayed in our very own gallery space. The focus has now shifted to exploring personal interests and celebrating the different skills and talents each child brings. Pupils are practising expressive mark-making and composition as they represent what they enjoy and what they aspire to, building confidence in their creativity while learning to respect and appreciate the diversity of others.

Year 1/2

In their Toys topic, Year 1 and 2 have been developing their drawing skills through careful observation and experimentation with a range of materials. Pupils have been practising lines of varying thickness by adjusting pencil grip and pressure, and exploring hatching and stippling to create texture, such as the patterns and direction of a teddy bear’s fur. They have also worked on pre-made outlines to practise these techniques before applying them to their own observational drawings of toys. This has allowed children to explore texture, pattern, and detail in a playful and tactile way, building on previous drawing skills while using media and mark-making in new ways.

Finished Work Coming Soon

Year 3/4

In Sculpture, Year 3 and 4 have been developing their understanding of form and detail through soap carving. Pupils began by creating observational sketches of seashells and sea creatures, concentrating on contour lines, fine textures, and subtle markings to help them notice intricate features. Using these studies as reference, they practised controlled carving techniques, such as scoring, shaving, and refining edges, to gradually remove material and shape their designs. Children experimented with different carving tools to create smooth surfaces, sharp ridges, and precise incisions, learning how to handle the soap safely and accurately. This activity helped them build confidence in manipulating materials, improving their dexterity, and translating detailed drawings into three-dimensional sculpture.

Year 5/6

As part of their Passage to India topic, Year 5 and 6 have been designing and creating clay lanterns inspired by Islamic Jali patterns, Mandala designs, and Rangoli art. Pupils began by planning intricate motifs, considering symmetry, repetition, and negative space. They then prepared their clay by wedging and rolling it to an even thickness before cutting out their lantern forms. Using a range of sculptural techniques, the children carved detailed patterns, pierced openings to allow light to shine through, and attached additional elements securely using slip and scoring. This project allowed pupils to develop their skills in modelling, refining, and constructing with clay while gaining a deeper appreciation of artistic traditions from India.

Reception

Reception have been learning all about different medias that can be used to create art. They have been using; rollers to create their farm yard background, finger-printing to make some of the animals, manipulating cotton wool balls for the sheep, and finally pens for adding that extra detail. By combining these skills, they have create some beautiful pieces of art that they can be proud of. Well done!

Year 1/2

Classes in year 1 and 2 have been exploring the explosive era of pop art, including some of the work of Andy Warhol. Children have identified how pop art uses bold colours, repetition, and imagery from popular culture. They have learnt simple techniques, including drawing bold, clear lines to create their own designs. They look fantastic Year 1/2!

Year 3/4

In Year 3/4, students have been learning about Tlingit fish art, a traditional form of Native American art from the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. They explored the distinctive shapes, bold outlines, and symmetrical designs often used to represent animals, particularly fish. Using pencils and fine liners, they practised drawing ovoids and U-shapes, then used these to create their own stylised fish designs inspired by Tlingit artwork. They produced striking, thoughtful pieces and showed real respect and curiosity about the culture behind the art. Great work Year 5/6!

Year 5/6

Year 5/6 students have been learning about Islamic art by exploring the beautiful and intricate patterns found in traditional Islamic tiles. They have practised creating repeating geometric designs using simple shapes like squares, triangles, and circles, developing their understanding of symmetry and pattern. Using rulers, coloured pencils, and printing techniques, the children carefully constructed their own tile-inspired artworks, focusing on accuracy and attention to detail. The students carved their designs into polystyrene sheets and then used rollers to apply printing ink. They then repeated this process to create some fantastic masterpieces. They showed great perseverance and pride in their work, and the final pieces are a wonderful reflection of their concentration, creativity, and growing appreciation for pattern-based art from different cultures.

Reception

Reception have been learning all about collage by tearing, cutting, gluing and arranging different materials to create an artic landscape.

They have also been experimenting with fingerpainting to create their very own toads. Take a look at our class names artwork to find out more.

Year 1/2

Year 1/2 have been exploring the exciting world of fireworks in their topic of 'fire'. They experimented with different brush stokes and experimented with colour blending to create these bold, striking pieces.

Year 3/4

Year 3/4 have been exploring the world of sculpture through the medium of clay. They have been practicing techniques such as carving, joining using slip.

Year 5/6

Year 5/6 have been studying the work of the famous sculptor Michelle Reader as part of their 'Tomorrows World' topic. Famously, Michelle Reader uses recycled materials to create thought-provoking sculptures. Year 5/6 have been planning their own.

Reception

Reception have already been showing off their artistic skills this year in their 'All About Me' topic. The children have been experimenting with paint to create their own self portraits and been practicing their sweeping stokes.

Year 1/2

There has been an invasion of toys in Y1/2! The children have been very excited to share their favourite and most loved toys in their new topic. In art lessons, they have been experimenting with shading, stippling and hatching as well as using different materials to draw with. The children have also been learning all about pencil grip and pressure in order to create lines of varying thickness to create a observational drawing of their most beloved toys. We can't wait to see what you create!

The children in Year 1/2 have been studying the works of Peter Thorpe. They have been using a range of techniques to create really bold pieces in his style. What do you think?

Year 3/4

Year 3/4 students have been learning all about drawing and sculpture in their first topic of the year 'Sunny Hunny'. The children were able to study the intricate patterns and shapes of shells and recorded their observations in their sketch books. Using carving tools, the children chipped away at soap bars to create their very own shells.

Now the students are beginning to learn all about the proportions of the face in their 'Ancient Egyptians' topic. They have already started to sketch individual facial features before bringing it altogether when they sketch their self-portraits. Tutankhamun's famous death mask is the inspiration for their artwork. We look forward to seeing their self-portraits.

Year 5/6

Year 5/6 students have delving into their topic by exploring a range of Indian art. The children have been learning about the features of Mehndhi and Paisley patterns and how they are used within Indian culture. They have then gone onto designing their own Mehndhi and Paisley patterns using a variety of lines.

Year 5/6 students have been revisiting their knowledge of portraits by discussing proportions of the face. However, this time the students have expressed this knowledge by drawing a portrait of Gandhi using charcoal. The children had to think carefully where the light and dark areas should be and where to smudge to have the most impact.

Finally, they explored other areas of art including Batik designs which were based on Hindu signs/ symbols they learned about within their RE lessons. If you look closely you may even spot some Indian animals. Great Work Year 5/6!

Year 1/2

Year 1/2 students have been learning about the Great Fire of London and created water-colour wash backgrounds for their landscape. They learned about primary colours and began to practice their mixing skills ready to paint their landscape. They used silhouettes to create the landscape of London and bright colours to create a vibrant blazing sky. Take a look at their beautiful work.

Year 3/4

Year 3/4 students have been learning about water-colours as part of their Rivers and Mountains topic. They have studied primary and secondary colours and practiced their mixing skills to create different shades and tones. They have practiced different techniques including the flick, thick-thin and wrist-flick. They used all this knowledge to then create their own rivers and mountains landscape.

Year 5/6

Year 5/6 have been learning all about sculpture as part of their 'Tomorrow's World' topic. They have planned and designed their own 3D sculpture using recycled materials. The children had to shape, layer and wrap their materials in order to create different desired texture and patterns. What do you think of their creations?

Year 5/6 have been doing an artist study of Lowry in their Fighting for Freedom topic. They have been learning about point-perspective to create a landscape with a 3D effect. They have applied all their water-colour skills and techniques to produce a water-colour landscape in the style of Lowry.
