Autumn Term

December 13th 2019

This week has been all about our Christmas show! Our dress rehearsal to the school and pre-school on Monday morning  gave the children an idea of what it was like to perform in front of an audience and the excitement built as they performed to a packed hall on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening! We are all very proud of how they rose to the occasion and seemed to enjoy their moment on the stage! We managed to get some lovely photographs of the children in their costumes and have added these to their learning journeys, as well as putting some of them on our Reception pages.

We have continued with a number of Christmas activities -  Christmas tree phonics, making and writing Christmas cards and Christmas crafts. The week was rounded off in a very festive manner when we all arrived in our Christmas jumpers to raise money for 'Save the Children'.

December 6th 2019

This week has been all about Christmas! We had a fantastic time at Audley End on Tuesday, joining with the Reception classes from the Cambourne site to visit Santa. The children enjoyed the train ride and were excited to meet Santa, give him their letters and receive a gift! When we returned to school we recounted our visit in 3 simple sentences, practicing these together before trying to write independently. We have decorated our classroom, making paper chains by cutting strips of paper and creating our own window decorations from tissue paper and lots of glue! We have read many versions of 'The Christmas Story' and enjoyed role play in our Christmas themed home corner. We have linked up with the KS1 classes to fine tune our Christmas play, undertaking a dress rehearsal this afternoon. We look forward to performing it to you next week!

Mrs Wordsmith - Word of the day

This week's words are:

  • tough
  • confused
  • baffled

Sounds and Tricky words

We have now covered all the Phase 2 sounds and will not be learning any new sounds this term. However we are continuing to blend and segment, helping us to read and write regular two and three letter words and simple phrases ( eg Dad and Mum, pots and pans, I can run)

Our focus words:

  • All the tricky words learnt so far - I  to  no  go  the  into

Number and shape of the week

Number of the week: 6

We have found 6 on a dice and talked about throwing 'double six', looked at dominoes and found those that have spots that add up to 6 ( eg 6 spots, no spots / 5 spots, 1 spot/ 4 spots, 2 spots etc) and made 6 using numicon. Can you find any examples of '6' at home ? (eg an egg box has space for 6 eggs, door number or phone number?)

Shape of the week: Hexagon

We have looked at hexagons this week as they have 6 straight sides. The children have enjoyed making patterns with hexagons, realising that they can fit together without leaving any gaps ( i.e. tessellate).

November 29th 2019

This week we have continued our learning about 'Space' and our classroom has been invaded by 'aliens', aliens that love underpants! We have made our own aliens from playdough adding numerous eyes, arms, legs and antennae. In maths we have counted balloons with Lecky the alien and 'fished' for aliens, crossing off the number we find on a number track. This has helped us to recognise numerals and sequence them.  We have used pictures of aliens, astronauts and spaceships to help us understand the concept of  '1 more'.

In anticipation of our  visit to see Santa next week,  we have been using our phonics to help us write letters that we can take with us. I am sure there will be some very excited children (and adults!) on Tuesday morning!

Maths Workshop

This event was very well attended. We would like to thank everyone for joining us and remind you to return your feedback form so we can take your comments into consideration when planning future events. In particular, it would be helpful for us to know the best time to hold events such as these - at the beginning of the school day, towards the end of the school day or after school?

November 22nd 2019

This week we have started our learning about 'Space'. The children have loved working in our 'Space station' and completing our astronaut training challenges. We have watched NASA videos explaining how astronauts clean their teeth, sleep and go to the toilet! We have been reading the story 'Whatever Next' and have acted it out and retold it with actions. In art we have painted planets and stars on foil, making both individual pictures and contributing to a larger class picture. We have used glitter in abundance to create our names!  In maths we have made rockets from 2d shapes, talking about the shapes we used and their properties.

Learning the songs for our Christmas play is now a regular feature of our day and we will start to practise alongside Y1 & 2 from next week. You should have received information about the times and days of our performances and a slip to return for tickets.

November 15th 2019

This week we have been learning all about hedgehogs. We have written our own hedgehog facts, using our phonics, made spiky hedgehogs using dried leaves and playdough hedgehogs, adding matchsticks as prickles. In maths we have been comparing the size of things. We have stood 'back to back' and talked about who is taller /shorter  and compared conkers and pine cones putting them in order of size. Finally we used cubes to measure hedgehogs and sequenced them from shortest to longest. Some of the children have really enjoyed measuring with cubes, finding items around the class to measure independently.

In PE we undertook a rota of activities to develop the skills of coordination, balance and teamwork.

Next week we will be blasting off into space!

8th November 2019

This week much of our learning has focused around Bonfire Night! We have found out about Guy Fawkes and why we celebrate November 5th each year, and talked about firework safety. We have made bonfire collages, and used pastels to create our own firework pictures. We have created firework patterns with beads as part of our 'finger gym' activity and added the correct number of stars to our 'firework maths'.

In PE we have listened to Autumn music and moved as if we were Autumn leaves and fireworks.

We have continued to read  about the adventures of Percy the Park Keeper, using our 'story spoons' to help us identify the different characters and retell the stories. We have started to look at wordless books and learn the skills of early reading. We have continued our work on shape, investigating which shapes we could make with lollypop sticks!

Ist November 2019

Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed the half-term break.

This week we launched our Autumn topic. We went on a walk around the school grounds to spot signs of Autumn and collected a range of different coloured, shaped and sized leaves. We have been reading stories about Percy the Park Keeper by Nick Butterworth and have enjoyed spending time in our roleplay area which has been turned into Percy's shed. We have been using our phonics to write lists of things that Percy needs to pack into his bag to help the animals rebuild their homes 'After the Storm'. In Maths we have been thinking about 2D shapes, focusing in particular on circles. Our Autumn topic will continue next week. We will be learning about Guy Fawkes and firework safety as well as exploring the world of hedgehogs.

Mrs Wordsmith  - Word of the Day

In Reception we are learning a new word every day to deepen our vocabulary and extend our language. The more children experience and hear these words the more confident they become at using them in their daily lives.  Please try to reinforce these at home.
